Basic Feather Wrapping Workshop

Basic feather wrapping

Sunday September 29th, 2019

1:00 pm – 2:30 pm (1 1/2-hours)

Students will learn several methods of wrapping and decorating a large feather that can be hung on the wall or used for smudging.

The reason feathers are used in smudging is because birds fly high in the sky, close to the creator. The smoke from the smudge rises to take prayers to the creator and the feathers act as a bridge to help connect them. The act of smudging is also a form of purification and because birds fly close to the creator they enhance the purification of the smudging.

Any large feathers can be used. If a person has been gifted an eagle feather it is more sacred because they fly so high. The reason that most smudge feathers are wild turkey is because they have always been a valuable food source for indigenous people throughout all of north America
