The Scroll Saw Workshop
Sunday September 29th, 2019 One Day Intensive Workshop
10:30 am – 3:00 pm
From the middle of the 19th century North America has been obsessed with wood details. The Carpenters Gothic style was aptly named for its attempt to mimic the new Gothic Revival carved stone elements by replicating these elements in wood. The second half of the 19th century witnessed the rise of mass produced exterior millwork details or gingerbread. Sadly many of these whimsical pieces of architectural folk art have disappeared through neglect or to place unsympathetic modern materials on a house.
This workshop will provide a hands-on overview of how to design and create your own whimsical pieces of architectural folk art for your house or as a crafts project.
This workshop will guide and instruct the attendee on:
- The design and how to make patterns,
- How to find out what style of gingerbread would have been on your house,
- How to replicate existing gingerbread,
- What type of tools are used,
- What are the best species of wood to use,
- How best to paint your gingerbread,
- Hierarchy of colour in gingerbread.
