Master Course | Backyard Birds


Raising ducks and chickens; learn how to care for backyard birds from the incubator to the laying coop or freezer, and every step along the way. Kayleigh will instruct you on how to reliably and ethically hatch and raise your own backyard birds. Do you want to benefit from keeping feathered friends in your backyard, for either eggs or meat, but don’t know how to begin? Kayleigh understands the difficulties and nuances of hatching fertilized eggs and raising backyard birds, and she will guide you through the essential details of this delicate process.

Many people find it difficult to acquire the tools necessary or source reliable information in order to begin their own backyard flock. This master course is designed to educate aspiring backyard bird owners on the hatching and maintenance of, but not limited to waterfowl and poultry.


MOD1 | Incubation

Two Classes – Each class is one hour long with a 15 minute Q&A at the end.

What You Will Learn in this Module:

  • Breed selection – attributes of different breeds, characteristics to consider
  • Fertilized egg storage – how to prepare eggs for the incubator
  • Incubation – equipment, humidity, temperature, and egg candling (an ultrasound for eggs)
  • Hatching process – hatching schedule, lockdown protocol (the important measures to take on the days leading up to hatch day)
  • First aid – emergency hatching rescues, identifying first aid concerns, treatment, building a bird first aid kit

MOD2 | Brooding and Growing

Two Classes – Each class is one hour long with a 15 minute Q&A at the end.

What You Will Learn in this Module:

  • Brooding and DIY designs – designing brooders, heating, bedding, equipment
  • Brooding nutrition requirements – crumble, medicated or non-medicated feed
  • Vitamin supplements – niacin, water additives
  • Females vs. Males – sexing day old ducklings, sexing by sound, sexing by feathers
  • Growing nutrition requirements – protein percentages in food, mash or pelleted food, grit, and foraging

MOD3 | Adult Flock

Four Classes – Each class is one hour long with a 15 minute Q&A at the end.

What You Will Learn in this Module:

  • Laying – eggs and when to expect them, for eating or hatching, healthy laying practices
  • Parasites – identification and treatment of parasites
  • Predation – how to make a predator resistant coop and run, wound treatment, foxes, raccoons, weasels, and birds of prey
  • Nesting – nesting boxes and broody birds
  • Health maintenance – general poultry and waterfowl anatomy, assessing overall health, basic treatments, when to consult a veterinarian
  • Meat processing – when to butcher, plucking, eviscerating, packaging and storing
  • Marketing and regulations – the legality of selling eggs and meat produced by backyard birds, how to market, where and what to sell
