A message from Dr. Christopher Cooper | Director of Education

As the Editor-in-Chief of Edifice Magazine for the past 20 years (Now Old Home Living Magazine) I get asked many reoccurring questions by our followers and subscribers of specific issues as they relate to a traditional home of character or in this case, a heritage home.

After 20 years of touring our “Restoration Road Trip” across Canada and abroad we have decided that we need to embrace the enormous changes in technologies as well as dealing with a global pandemic to bring owners and lovers of older and heritage homes together in a live setting, safely!

We have created this workshop to deal with the top ten questions and concerns asked by our followers and subscribers.

What You Will Learn in this Homeowner’s Series:

Module One: Formula for Restoration

Treating the cause not the symptom, what issues to look out for in owning or purchasing an older house. Structure, and planing your restoration project.

Module Two: The Heating System

Heating system overviews… the definite do’s and don’ts on older and modern heating systems.

Module Three: Masonry, Brick and Stone

An overview of brick and stone with a look at some reasons why it has failed. What to look for and how it should be restored properly and professionally!

Module Four: Wood Windows & Doors

Why you should keep your wood windows and doors. The best way to make them as energy efficient as replacements and to last another 100 – 200 years.

Module Five: Heritage Roofing

Best materials that fit your budget, as well as proper flashing and water management.

Module Six: Softwood and Hardwood floors

The proper methods of preservation and restoration of your prized wooden floors.

Module Seven: Plumbing and Electrics

Outdated plumbing, fixtures, bathrooms, and kitchens etc. Best designs, best solutions to repair or retrofit. Outdated electrical, what to do with Knob and Tube?

Module Eight: Curb Appeal

Heritage Curb Appeal, get that magazine cover look! Colour, lighting plantings etc.

Module Nine: Antique Hardware

Antique hardware is one of the most character defining elements of an older home. Refinishing basics.

Module Ten: Adding-On

Thinking of adding-on to your heritage house, this module will help you in your decision making process.
