The Edifice Guild & Atelier Peer Review Council
Educational Peer review is defined by the Edifice Guild & Atelier as a process of subjecting a teaching fellow or author’s scholarly work, research, or ideas to the scrutiny of others who are experts in the same field before including such techniques, products and materials to our students, interns and ultimately the consumer and the public.
It functions to encourage our teaching fellows or authors of our professional intensive programmes to meet the accepted high standards of their discipline and to control the dissemination of research data to ensure that unwarranted claims, unacceptable interpretations, or personal views are not published or taught without prior expert review.
It helps ensure that papers or scholastic programmes published or taught by Edifice answer meaningful research questions and draw accurate conclusions based on professionally executed long term experimentation and or real-world hands-on experience.
Submission of low-quality manuscripts, instruction and training has become increasingly prevalent, and The Edifice Guild & Atelier Peer Review Council acts as a filter to prevent this work from reaching our education community, the public or our Guild’s Members.
The major advantage of this peer review process is that peer-reviewed articles provide a trusted form of scientific communication. Since scientific knowledge is cumulative and builds on itself, this trust is particularly important.
Unfortunately, the recent explosion in online only/electronic journals and blogs has led to mass publication of many “How-To and DIY” articles and videos with little or no peer review. This poses significant risk to advances in scientific knowledge as it pertains to heritage buildings in North America and its future potential.
We have invited a broad scope of professionals and researchers to our Peer Review Council from around the world and will hold a quarterly symposium and review of content for our papers and educational programming. As we move forward, we will introduce our council members.
