Module One: Formula for Restoration
Treating the cause not the symptom, what issues to look out for in owning or purchasing an older house in Nova Scotia from the bottom of the foundations to the top of the chimney. Structure, and planning your renovation project.

Module Two: The Heating System
Heating system overviews… the do’s and don’ts on older and modern heating systems. Pellet Stoves, Wood Burners, Oil and Heat Pumps.

Module Three: Masonry, Brick and Stone
An overview of brick and stone foundations found in Nova Scotia… with a look at some reasons why it has failed. What to look for and how it should be restored properly and professionally!

Module Four: Wood Windows & Doors
Why you should keep your wood windows and doors. The best way to make them as energy efficient as replacements and to last another 100 – 200 years. This portion of the workshop will have some hands-on demonstration by Dr. Cooper.

Module Five: Heritage Roofing
Best materials that fit your budget, as well as proper flashing and water management.

Module Six: Softwood and Hardwood floors
The proper methods of preservation and restoration of your prized wooden floors.

Module Seven: Plumbing and Electrics
Outdated plumbing, fixtures, bathrooms, and kitchens etc. Best designs, best solutions to repair or retrofit. Outdated electrical, what to do with Knob and Tube?

Module Eight: Curb Appeal

Dr. Christopher Cooper (The Old Home Doctor)

Dr. Christopher Cooper has four and-a-half decades of experience in the hands-on restoration, renovation, rehabilitation and design of heritage buildings both domestic and commercial on five continents. Christopher has written and researched and published many books on the workings and repair of historic homes and buildings.
Since 2002 Dr. Cooper has been the Editor-in-Chief, photographer and writer of the most influential magazine in Canada dedicated to owners of older homes – Edifice Magazine.
Dr. Cooper is the senior fellow and founder at the Edifice Atelier an educational institute fundamentally created with the intent on educating people on lost arts as it relates to heritage buildings and architecture.
Recently Christopher has embarked on creating several multi-award winning television series (Heritage Places and Old Home Living) and documentaries in which he writes, produces and hosts.
Christopher has lectured all over the world and has become well known for his laid-back humorous and lively approach to his workshops.
